Effective leaders set the Conditions for success. Leaders have to think and act with intention to establish an environment that provides both the capability and opportunity for productive outcomes to be achieved across the organization. It is the leader's responsibility to set the workforce up for success.

One way to capture this concept of setting the conditions for success, is for leaders to EQUIP, INCLUDE, EMPOWER the workforce.

When leaders Equip their teams, they provide them with the appropriate level of tools, resources, gear, etc. to get the job done well. Everyone needs the right budget, appropriate access to systems, and useful equipment to do their work. Everyone deserves a pleasant and safe work environment, both in the physical space and interactions with coworkers and supervisors. Equipping teams also includes providing relevant training so that people have the skill sets to support their functions with the right knowledge and experience to be successful. Well equipped teams can just focus on achieving the mission.

When leaders Include their teams, they share information and ask lots of questions, in a purely curious way. Inclusive leaders want the input, knowledge, and experience of their teams, since the perspective of those doing the work is often most relevant to a productive outcome. When there is a disconnect between the leader's thoughts about how something should be versus what is actually getting done, including the team members can be extremely helpful to clarify what is needed in order to make adjustments and be successful. Rather than having employees working to further a personal or business agenda, or just checking off task list boxes - including the workforce brings them into the overall process of developing success - by aligning people to achieve a meaningful purpose.

When leaders Empower their teams, they facilitate the workforce to accomplish the organization’s objectives, providing vision, priorities, and frameworks. Empowering leaders enable team members to thrive with better explanations, access to more information, and an increased network of people. Teams are given more flexibility and space to grow and perform, to create solutions to problems, and commensurate with their competence are provided with the permission and responsibility to succeed in their roles. Empowered team members grow more self-sufficient and achieve greater outcomes. Empowering leaders who maintain support for struggles and successes, cultivate outcome-oriented professionals.

As an effective leader - consider what you have done lately to intentionally equip, include, and empower your organization and its team members to excel. What are some ways you can set the conditions for success?
