Why should anyone listen to you, to follow you? Credibility = “Worthy to be Believed”
Regarding Credibility, team members need to believe 3 simple things: As the leader –
(1) You'll do what you say you're going to do.
(2) You'll know what you're doing.
(3) You'll be there for them with their best interests in mind.
Let’s briefly consider two integrated factors that lends to Credibility in Leadership:
● Character
● Competence
Demonstrate follow through, do the things you say you will do, align your words and actions, no fluff, fulfill your commitments – these concepts apply to how people perceive your Integrity and Character.
Following through on stated values, even if they are unpopular values, builds integrity and consistency in character.
It is critical that others see your actions as consistent with your words, as Integrity can affect the business bottom line. Behavioral Integrity is not about what a leader personally values necessarily, but rather how well a leader follows through on the values he or she claims to hold. Walk the talk. Keep your word. Consistently. This will show your Character to others.
Your employees, managers, and the organization are entrusting you to do the right things for them. If you have demonstrated a solid character that makes you someone who is trustworthy and can uphold your commitments and values, can you also be valuable in the actual work being completed?
Your value and level of credibility rises when you know and can demonstrate you know what you’re talking about. You’re best suited to guide and grow others in their roles to further the organization’s objectives when you know what you’re talking about. You’re able to sustain and expand the engagement and trust of the team members, partner agencies, and customer base, when you know what you’re talking about.
Being confident in your knowledge, skills, and experiences will be the basis for your demonstrated Competence.
While leaders don't always have to be the subject matter expert in the areas they are leading (although it’s helpful) it’s certainly beneficial to understand what is involved in the work being done. Title, status, seniority don't necessitate trust and competence. It is so much more about your demonstrated care, competence, commitment, collaboration, communication, that will foster more belief in you as a leader from your teams.
To be worthy of being believed - consider how you can demonstrate solid character and competence in your organization.
